Do you Laugh out Loud in Ministry??

Thinking back to why we started this blog, I thought of the title, “Laughing Out Loud in the Ministry”. Many people think that ministry is stuffy and boring. To be honest, if you’re not careful, it can be that way. You get set in the routine of things and your Christian life becomes habit. Habits aren’t in and of themselves bad, but with the definition of habit being “an acquired mode of behavior that has become nearly or completely involuntary”, that can be a problem for your ministries to be nearly or completely involuntary.

Why can’t we have fun in ministry? My theory is that we look at ministry as a job.  While it is our job as Christians to be serving the Lord, ministry should be our way of life, not a 9 to 5, clock in and clock out situation.

I love to hear stories about the people who’ve led someone to the Lord or got to be a witness just by living their life. My brothers all go to the gym. They love to work out. I have heard all of them at one point or another say something like “I got to talking to this guy at the gym and got a chance to witness to him”. At the gym my family goes to, not only do the workers know all of my brothers and parents by name, they also know they are all Christians and that my dad is a pastor. How do they know that? Because my dad has spent time chatting with them in the mornings when he goes in, and getting to know them, and investing in their lives all while he is simply living his life. He is doing what he would normally do, going to the gym, and in doing that, he is being a witness. He’s the same way when he goes out to eat. I guarantee that every waiter and waitress at Bob Evans, Cracker Barrel, and Denny’s (His favorite places) know him and have either heard the gospel from him or have been given a tract by him. I was with him when he witnessed to a guy at a Chinese restaurant. He noticed the guy was carrying and so he went over and asked him what kind of gun he had, which led to what kind of work he did, which led to did he go to church anywhere, etc.

My husband and his friend like to play Frisbee golf and one day while playing Frisbee golf, they ran into some Jehovah’s Witnesses. They got a chance to talk to them for a few minutes about the Lord. We also live near the park they play Frisbee golf, and those same two Jehovah’s Witness guys showed up in our neighborhood a week or so later, and my husband got a chance to talk to them again. My husband and his friend simply had a testimony and took the time to invest in someone else’s life while they were living their lives.

Ministry isn’t a boring stuffy job. It’s living your life and investing in those that you run into along the way. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for going out on visitation and participating in ministries at your local church, but don’t let it stop there. If you are living it 24/7 and it is who you are, then maybe you won’t feel so much like you’ve got to clock in and do your ministry time. If you’re going to go on walks in your neighborhood, take some tracts with you and stop at a few doors. You were going to walk anyway. If you have to be at work, does everyone you work with know that you’re a Christian and that you love it? Or do they view you as that grumpy, boring religious person? If you’re going to the park, talk to the other moms there and get to know them; ask them if they go to church, invite them to yours, share with them the kids' programs your church has. You were going to be at the park anyway, don’t be the grumpy mum who looks like she didn’t get the nap she wanted.  →→→
Is that you? Are you a go-getter or a grumpy mom?

Supermarket Shenanigans

Last week we had VBS and by the time it ended each day we were all exhausted. Luckily I was able to get in a power nap each day before I got busy with the things I had to get done at home. One afternoon I had woken up from my nap and realized that the baby was still asleep. It was the perfect time for me to make a quick trip to the store. My husband was kind enough to let me nap, so I thought I’d just take the two older girls with me so he could rest. We had about four things we needed to pick up and it would be a quick trip so it was no big deal.

Every time I take my daughters to the store with me, we have a pep talk before we even get out of the car.

Basically, it’s like this:
Me: Girls, we’re going to behave, we don’t touch anything, and we don’t ask for anything. Do you understand?
Girls: Yes, mom!
Me: You stay with me and no fighting! Do you understand?
Girls: Yes, mom! Can we get a toy?

We started quickly throughout the store, as we went along I kept thinking of more things we needed. The basket was filling up and I made it over to the food section and I came across my “mommy treat” and picked it up and tucked it in a small space that was left in the top basket. I had just a few more things to get off the list and we headed towards the checkout. I typically choose the self- checkout, I can move at my pace and get out! Well the line was extremely long but it tends to move pretty fast. We stood in line for a few minutes, and then it hit me that I had forgotten one of the main things that was on my list. We got out of line, and headed to the back of the store to get it. We came all the way back and stood in line again for just a few minutes and then it was our turn. At this point, my daughters had stopped behaving. I had one daughter who was looking at candy, and if I'm not quick enough I would be buying the whole shelf because it would all be opened. Then I have the other daughter who likes to help but can’t ever find the barcode to scan. I felt all of the people behind me just watching this chaos. Finally, we checked out, I corralled the girls back to the cart and we were on our way. We made it all the way to the car and I opened the trunk only to realize: I don’t remember buying my treat. Sure enough, I looked down and there it was tucked under the baby seat.

My thoughts: Oh my word, I just stole something!, How did I just get away with that?, I’m going to jail, I really don’t want to go back in, my two little girls just watched their momma steal something…

My oldest daughter decided it was the perfect time to tell me, “Momma, you’re making a lot of mistakes.” Wow, thank you Stella. I hadn’t noticed.

I did the right thing and casually walked right back to the self checkout and paid for the treat that I had just walked out of the store with. Now, we could finally go home! Wrong. We reached the car… again and I just couldn’t remember putting the grocery bag in my cart after checking out. I looked through my bags and guess what? I forgot.

I was so frustrated with myself, plus I was getting heavy sighs from my children. We marched back into the store and got the treat. My fifteen minute trip turned into an hour but hey, I had a delicious treat to eat when I got home.

By the way, this Mommy treat I speak of .. Edible cookie dough! It's like Heaven in a cup.

So today I have two questions. Have you ever accidentally stolen something? If so, what? Also, what are some of your favorite mommy treats?

The Glasses Conundrum

I’ve been wearing contacts since I was about twelve. I had glasses before that, but I never wore them. The problem was that my dad went with me to get my eye exam that day, and after they dilated my eyes I couldn’t see to choose a pair of glasses, so…. my dad picked some for me.
I’m just going to leave it at that.

Ever since then, I’ve been wearing contacts. I usually keep a backup pair of glasses, but I hate wearing them. I hate not being able to see out of the corners and sides, but I need something for at night when I take my contacts out.

Now, I am not an ambitious person when it comes to my style. I find what’s comfortable and I stick to it.  I have had the same style of glasses for the past ten years, because instead of looking around when I go in, I just pick the one that looks like the old pair. I know that it doesn’t look completely hideous on me so I go with it. But hey, it’s just for at nights and early mornings anyways, so it doesn’t have to be flashy.

All of that brings me to this week. I needed some new contacts and to update my glasses prescription. They haven’t been updated in several years, but I didn’t wear them enough to let it bother me, but they were old, and bent, and it was just time. So off I went.

I decided this time around that I was going to look around and try to find something different. The eye doctor had a deal where when you buy one pair of glasses, you get a second pair for only $10 more. Yay me! I spent some time looking around and trying on different styles. When all was said and done, I had chosen two pairs. One was completely different than anything I had ever chosen before. I liked it, but it was out of my comfort zone. The second pair was similar to the style I had before, but it was a little nicer and a little flashier. I was confident with my choice and I gave them to the clerk.

After my exam, I was checking out and the clerk went and grabbed my glasses. When she came back she said “This choice surprises me.” I thought she was talking about the first pair. My out of the box choice. Shockingly enough, she was talking about my comfort zone choice. She said she didn’t see people my age choosing a style like that very often. I put them on and asked “do they look bad?” she said “no, just different.” Then I tried on the other pair, and she said “now that I like a lot better.”  The glasses that I’ve always chosen…. Apparently, not great. Have you ever seen this spaghetti sauce commercial?

It ends with her asking “I wonder what other bad decisions I’ve made.” That’s about how I left the eye doctor that day.

Now, don’t forget the giveaway this week! You still have a chance for six more entries. Don’t forget to leave your name in your comment so we know who to enter into the drawing, and let us know if you liked and shared our post!

The Great Giveaway

So today marks the fifty-second post here on the blog. While not actually a landmark number, still, I'm sometimes surprised that we've lasted this long. We've heard occasionally from different people who have told us that they absolutely love the blog, that they read every post, that they really enjoy our stories, etc.

We, of course, are very pleased to hear this. We think y'all are a great bunch of readers.

However ...

We have wondered why there are so few of you that comment on the blog. We've speculated that perhaps readers don't have time (seriously, you couldn't take two minutes?); that you're not sure what to say (in a pinch, "love it" and "me too" work really well); that you don't want to bother us with comments every time (bother us. Please); or that it's too hard to leave a comment.

As to that last complaint, we have heard you. We've adjusted the settings so that you can comment anonymously and without creating a profile on google. We do still use author approval because that cuts down on spam and, you know, weirdos.

At any rate, we decided to do a three-way post and a giveaway. I'll explain the giveaway in a minute. But first, our three-way conversation started late last night and went something like this:

Jill: Ok so we need to have a conversation because I announced that we were doing a giveaway on the blog this coming week.

Stephanie:  What are we giving away?

Jill:  Two gift cards.

after a long period of no response--

Jill:  *crickets*

Stephanie:  So what do we want to talk about?

I'm pretty sure there was a long suffering sigh along with that response.

Jill:  We can have a conversation about the blog, and maybe our favorite posts so far. Then we can discuss the fact that we don't get many commenters, and we'll announce the giveaway.

Stephanie:  Ok so what was your favorite post so far?

Jill:  Where's Kylee?

Stephanie:  Am I my Kylee's keeper?

Jill:  Brat! I just messaged Matt and told him to tell Kylee to get on her phone. Her phone's usually dead by Sunday night.

A short time later ...

Jill:  I called Matt who said his phone was about to die, but he told Kylee to get on her phone so she should be coming any time now.

Jill:  ... Anytime ...

Jill ... any ... time ...

Kylee:  This family is so demanding of my time. My phone was charging so I could look in Pinterest.

Stephanie:  So selfish ... wanting time to yourself.

Stephanie:  So again, what is your favorite post so far?

Jill:  My favorite post was ... maybe ... Guarding the Gate? About fending off the females. Or possibly the one about living in a household full of males. Which one of y'all's do you like the best?

after a long period of no response--

Jill:  *crickets*

Stephanie:  First, I want to point out that both of those are your posts. Second, my favorites are Crisis of Identity and 2 am Wake Up Call.

Jill:  We're each supposed to pick which one of our own that we like. I can't pick one of y'all's because then I'm playing favorites.

Kylee:  I like all of them. I can't pick a favorite either!

Stephanie:  I also like My Kid Said What. Apparently people only want to read about boys and babies.

Kylee:  I'm working on a sequel to that one!

Jill:  Boys and babies kind of describes our lives. Maybe that's what we should have named the blog.

Stephanie:  I think we need to add something in the post about letting us know why they don't comment. Or give us suggestions to make it easier.

Jill:  So are we giving away gift cards to the coffee shop of their choice, or what? And what do they have to do to enter the giveaway?

Stephanie:  I think either an Amazon gift card or a Starbucks gift card.

Kylee:  they definitely have to like, comment and share. I think they should get a card to the coffee place of their choice.

Stephanie:  And they need to comment on every post this week, and share each post on social media and they need to tell us they shared it.

There you have it. The gist of it anyway. There was also some discussion about some inappropriate comments that my granddaughters made, but I edited that out.

So here it is in a nutshell:

We're doing a giveaway. We will give out two prizes. They will be your choice of an Amazon gift card or a gift card to the coffee shop of your choice.

You will get one entry for commenting on each post this week. (There will be three posts, including this one.)

You will get a second entry for "liking" the link we post on Facebook or Instagram.

You will get a third entry for sharing the link to our posts on Facebook or Instagram.

So if we have three posts a week (and we do), and if you comment on each post, plus like them on social media, plus share them on social media, you can get a total of nine entries into the contest.

Multiple comments on one post (although they will make us happy) still only count as one entry.

The contest starts with today's post, and the contest closes next Sunday night, July 30th, at midnight eastern time. Monday, July 31st, we will announce the two winners.

So what to comment? How about tell us why you don't usually comment, Or tell us what your favorite post so far has been. Or tell us both. We're not picky.

P.S. The picture is of two of my granddaughters one afternoon after VBS. They were adorable, so I thought I'd share. Feel free to comment on the picture too.

Good luck!

Question, I Got Questions

So this week is Vacation Bible School at our church. Kylee and Stephanie are both working in VBS this week as well, and our time is minimal. So we decided that this week on our posts, we would each answer the same twenty-five questions. Here are mine:

1. Are you named after anyone?
Not that I’m aware of. And I think my parents would have mentioned it if that were the case. After all, what’s the purpose of being named after someone if you’re never told who you’re named after?

2. When was the last time you cried?
Thursday morning in the shower. Did I mention we’re heading into Vacation Bible School week? It’s either cry or kill someone. I chose the one that didn’t include a prison term.

3. If you were another person, would you be a friend of yourself?
Sure, I would be, but would I accept the friendship? It’s a toss-up.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Duh!

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?
Whether or not they’re breathing.

6. What is your eye color?
Green

7. Scary movies or happy endings?
I prefer scary movies with happy endings.

8. Favorite smells?
I live in a household full of guys. I prefer to smell nothing. At all. Ever.

9. What’s the furthest you’ve ever been from home?
Well I was going to say Uganda, but we were actually living there so technically, it was home.

10. Do you have any special talents?
My sons said I have the uncanny ability to bore a hole through their heads with a look.

11. Where were you born?
I don’t personally remember, but I’m pretty sure it was in a hospital.

12. What are your hobbies?
If I ever got any free time I’d probably develop some hobbies.

13. Do you have any pets?
We have a very attention-needy German shepherd.

14. What do you want to be when you grow up?
I always wanted to be a mom and a pastor’s wife. Hey, look at me! I’m living the dream!

15. Who was your first best friend?
Jack. He was imaginary. He was quite the looker.

16. How tall are you?
Tall enough that I don’t have to wear heels, but not so tall that I can’t.

17. Funniest moment throughout school?
Probably the time I was headed down a narrow staircase at the head of a crowd composed of almost the entire student body. I slipped and fell and my wrap around skirt unwrapped.

18. How many countries have you visited?
Canada, Mexico, Uganda, Kenya, Great Britain, Brussels and The South

19. What was your favorite/worst subject in high school?
Do you mean my favorite AND my worst, or my favorite worst? Because the second choice doesn’t make any sense. (My favorite was English. Can you tell?)

20. What is your favorite drink? Animal? Perfume?
I prefer not to drink either an animal or perfume.

21. What sports have you/do you play?
Is sleeping a sport? Cause I could totally dominate in that field.

22. Favorite memory from childhood?
Playing wedding in the church building. And then racing my siblings over the tops of the pews.

23. How would you describe your fashion sense?
Ha!

24. What phone do you have (ios or android)?
Iphone. There is no other kind.

25. Tell us one of your bad habits.
Waiting until the last minute to write my blog post.

Blood, Sweat and Tears

As most of you know Vacation Bible School takes weeks of preparation. However, I believe the week before VBS is the busiest, craziest, most exhausting and trying week of them all. There is a lot of blood, sweat and tears that go into a week like vbs. For example, my sister-in-law and I were creating this treasure map scene in our foyer and while working on "Pirate Island", she cut her finger with a box cutter. She practically cut it all the way off, it was gushing blood and ... just kidding, it was nothing a simple bandaid couldn't handle. Later that day I was prepping the penny buckets with signs for our boys verses GIRLS competition and I was using a heavy duty tape dispenser and harpooned my finger. Hopefully, that will be all of the injuries for the next to weeks.

This year my husband wanted to go big or go home when it came to our backdrop! I mean, you have to when it's a pirate ship. Right? Well, we went big, all right.

This photo is not the finished product but I can't give it all away before VBS!

Speaking of sweaty jobs, has anyone ever worked a back pack vacuum with a twenty pound child in tow? That's considered working out to me.

This week required very long work days. I'm not sure if that's harder on parents or the kids. Finding ways to entertain the kids while trying to be productive isn't always an easy task.

Sometimes we were successful ...

And sometimes we weren't ...

Although this week isn't over yet, we have made a lot of memories despite the blood, sweat and tears.

We are looking forward to a great Vacation Bible School next week. Please pray with us that everything flows smoothly with no shipwrecks. More importantly, please pray we see many children come to know Christ as their Savior!

Hey, Hey it's Your Birthday!!!!

Well, today's the day. My baby boy is turning one!

He has been walking for about a month now and he's jabbering away (some is decipherable, some not so much). Sitting here, writing this post I'm thinking of how crazy this last year has been.

We just finished Vacation Bible School at our church. Last year for VBS I was 8 months pregnant with him and it was a very long and tiring week. This year seemed to be a breeze! After VBS I stopped traveling with my husband because I couldn't handle the trips anymore. So, I stayed home and waited. It seemed really difficult having just one kid at the time (not that I was taking into account the whole 9 months prego thing), but I wasn't sure how I would handle two of them!

The day finally came! He was here and we were a family of four.
That first month is a blur. I remember a few things. Like after we'd been home for a few days and I was completely and totally exhausted. My husband was working in the other room, our little girl was watching a cartoon, and the new baby was in the swing. I thought "if I just sit here and close my eyes I'll feel better. I won't fall asleep, just rest."  WRONG!!!! I fell asleep and awoke a little bit later to the baby screaming bloody murder. When I looked over, my little girl was trying to kiss her new baby brother by climbing in the swing on top of him. I may or may not have screamed 😏, and I tried to jump up, but that only caused a lot of pain. My hubby heard my maybe / maybe not scream and came running. He got our daughter off the baby and saved the day, but not before I started blubbering like a little baby. It went something like "I'm a horrible mother! I can't even take care of them both! What kind of mom falls asleep when she's supposed to be watching her kids?!?"...Well, that's what it was supposed to sound like.... It probably sounded like "I'm a hmmmmsmdf msdofinwneih. I can't even tjajienfihds a aidfoihao. What kind of mwoieihoisoi wieonfoisn asleep when adkjfiajidifoj skfiajiewj kiiiidddddsssss?!?!"

Then there was the day when our good friends brought us dinner and after dinner she was trying to help out with stuff around the house, and then I burst into tears again about how horrible of a housewife I was now that I had two kids. I'm pretty sure that I called my mom that night and she got a lot of cry talk as well. Apparently, I thought that I was supposed to be able to do everything right out of the hospital. Because doesn't every woman have a spotless and beautiful home, and just have it all together in general right away?? 😉

Having a one year old with a new baby was definitely fun. She always knew that when it was time to nurse that meant that mom was immobile. Apparently that meant "FREEDOM!!!!". It was touch everything, drag out food, and hey, let's play in the toilet water for a few. Needless to say, nursing was an often interrupted process!

There are still some days that I'm simply surviving. The other day I was feeling extra on top of the world so I had two of my nieces with me off and on throughout the day. The oldest is four and the younger is two. At one point, I thought it'd be a good idea to make a quick stop at the grocery store with four kids.... We only needed a couple of things, so how bad could it be?? I started out with "I know you're big enough to walk, but you are all going to stay in the cart because I cannot keep up with all of you. I know your mommy probably let's you walk, but I am not your mommy. We have to get two things so we're gonna be really fast and we're all gonna be really good. Right? ok!"  It wasn't terrible, but it was 15 minutes of "don't touch, sit down, no you can't ride the horse, sit down, get off your cousin, hold this, put that back, sit down, no we will not buy more doughnuts." I wish I had a picture of all four of them in the cart, but I didn't really have the moment...or the free hand, for that matter. I did get the title of "best Nee-Nee ever!" because of it all. (Nee-Nee is what my nieces call me, by the way) So I think it was worth the whole day! Will I ever go to the store with all of them again, probably not. I don't know how my sister in law ever gets grocery shopping done!

And now I have to end because the birthday boy to be has a huge issue with not being held right now. The work never ends! What about you, do you have it all together??

What's in A Name?

Names are important, don'tcha think? I mean, I have six kids, and it would be awfully hard to distinguish between them if I always had to call "hey, you" when I wanted one.

People spend a lot of time thinking about names for their children. They name them after people they want to honor, or family names that they want to continue. they might research the meaning of the names or put together parts of other names to come up with a whole new one.

Companies do the same thing with their products. Advertising is a billion dollar industry, and items are named in order to make people think they can't do without them.

For instance, mascara. There is a brand of mascara's name called "Better than Sex". It's made by a company called Too Faced. It's supposed to be great mascara, but it's way out of my price range, so I bought the bargain brand that's supposed to be a cheaper version. It's called "Scandaleyes Retro Glam" by Rimmel.

I used to use a product line called Dream Curls for my hair. Not that I ever achieved dream curls, but I was just happy to avoid Nightmare Hair. However, Dream Curls was discontinued so I had to go hunting for a new line of products. The sales clerk at Ulta suggested a product from a line called "Not Your Mother's". I don't really care if my mother used the same product or not, I just wanted something that worked for my hair. So now I'm using Not Your Mother's Kinky Moves.

Seriously.

But I do have a point to all of this rather than just a commentary on inappropriately named health and beauty names. See, our Vacation Bible School is coming up next week. We have a main skit that continues each day through the week. I'm writing the skit and I need to come up with some names. The villain in the skit is Walker D. Plank. The hero is Long John Silver.

The villain has two henchmen (hench people, actually). Their names are Jack and Sparrow. I also have two main characters in the skit, a boy and a girl. I need names for them and I've got nothing.

So now at long last I'm arriving at the reason for this post. I need names. Good sailor names. I'm open to any suggestions. I've already rejected "Paulie and Sara Lee". (The people playing these characters are Paul and Sarah.) I've also rejected "Black and Pearl".

So help me out here. Leave some suggestions in the comments. Or comment on the link on Facebook. I've only got a week left and these characters need some names.

We should be enthusiastic in all that we do. It’s not always easy, but if you’re right with God there shouldn’t be a problem.

F is for Forgiveness
We must forgive, to move forward. If someone says something mean to you, do you hold a grudge? God forgives us when we do something wrong, doesn’t he?

G is for God fearing
Proverbs 31:30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is in vain; but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

H is for Help meet
God created us to help our husbands not to be a hindrance.

I is for Integrity
The quality of being honest.

J is for Jesus
Jeremiah 32:27 Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?

K is for Kind
A godly woman should be kind with her words and her actions.

L is for Listener
Women tend to try to help or comment on our “feelings” to certain situations. Most times all we need to do is listen. If we have a problem, we need to take it to the Lord.

M is for Modest
1 Timothy 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

N is for Nurturer
A good mother is one who teaches her children the Bible Way.

O is for Others
As young children we are taught in Sunday school about the word “JOY”. Jesus, Others, Yourself. We ought to care for others and not just ourselves.

P is for Patience
Things don’t always go as we hope. “But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.” Romans 8:25

Q is for Quiet
I don’t believe this means we should never say anything or speak at all. Rather, be respectful, and be content if we don’t always get to speak our peace.

R is for Reputation
Our testimony. Does your testimony show that you live a Godly life?

S is for Servant
Whether your changing diapers in the nursery or playing the piano, a godly woman serves with a joyful heart.

T is for Trustworthy
If my husband asks me to do something, I ought to follow through and do what I say I'm going to do. If I forget, or procrastinate he’s not likely to trust in me to get things done.

U is for Understanding
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

V is for Virtue
Proverbs 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

W is for Wise
Proverbs 29:9 A fool uttered all his mind; but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.

X is for eXample
As Christians, people are watching and waiting for us to mess up. What kind of example are you being to the people of the World?

Y is for Yielding
Am I doing the things that I want to do? I should be yielding to what God’s will is for my life.

Z is for Zealous

A godly woman is one who is hardworking and puts her whole heart into whatever task she is doing.
