Supermarket Shenanigans

Last week we had VBS and by the time it ended each day we were all exhausted. Luckily I was able to get in a power nap each day before I got busy with the things I had to get done at home. One afternoon I had woken up from my nap and realized that the baby was still asleep. It was the perfect time for me to make a quick trip to the store. My husband was kind enough to let me nap, so I thought I’d just take the two older girls with me so he could rest. We had about four things we needed to pick up and it would be a quick trip so it was no big deal.

Every time I take my daughters to the store with me, we have a pep talk before we even get out of the car.

Basically, it’s like this:
Me: Girls, we’re going to behave, we don’t touch anything, and we don’t ask for anything. Do you understand?
Girls: Yes, mom!
Me: You stay with me and no fighting! Do you understand?
Girls: Yes, mom! Can we get a toy?

We started quickly throughout the store, as we went along I kept thinking of more things we needed. The basket was filling up and I made it over to the food section and I came across my “mommy treat” and picked it up and tucked it in a small space that was left in the top basket. I had just a few more things to get off the list and we headed towards the checkout. I typically choose the self- checkout, I can move at my pace and get out! Well the line was extremely long but it tends to move pretty fast. We stood in line for a few minutes, and then it hit me that I had forgotten one of the main things that was on my list. We got out of line, and headed to the back of the store to get it. We came all the way back and stood in line again for just a few minutes and then it was our turn. At this point, my daughters had stopped behaving. I had one daughter who was looking at candy, and if I'm not quick enough I would be buying the whole shelf because it would all be opened. Then I have the other daughter who likes to help but can’t ever find the barcode to scan. I felt all of the people behind me just watching this chaos. Finally, we checked out, I corralled the girls back to the cart and we were on our way. We made it all the way to the car and I opened the trunk only to realize: I don’t remember buying my treat. Sure enough, I looked down and there it was tucked under the baby seat.

My thoughts: Oh my word, I just stole something!, How did I just get away with that?, I’m going to jail, I really don’t want to go back in, my two little girls just watched their momma steal something…

My oldest daughter decided it was the perfect time to tell me, “Momma, you’re making a lot of mistakes.” Wow, thank you Stella. I hadn’t noticed.

I did the right thing and casually walked right back to the self checkout and paid for the treat that I had just walked out of the store with. Now, we could finally go home! Wrong. We reached the car… again and I just couldn’t remember putting the grocery bag in my cart after checking out. I looked through my bags and guess what? I forgot.

I was so frustrated with myself, plus I was getting heavy sighs from my children. We marched back into the store and got the treat. My fifteen minute trip turned into an hour but hey, I had a delicious treat to eat when I got home.

By the way, this Mommy treat I speak of .. Edible cookie dough! It's like Heaven in a cup.

So today I have two questions. Have you ever accidentally stolen something? If so, what? Also, what are some of your favorite mommy treats?

  1. The trip would have probably been easier if you got moose tracks instead. Just saying.

    1. That would make grocery shopping real simple, it wouldn't get done because I would be dead from an allergic reaction. No big deal😩

  2. Edible cookie dough?! Really? That doesn't even sound worth the trouble! However, I will concede that I am a rare duck when it comes to this topic. Everybody looks at me like I have lobsters crawling out of my ears when I say something like "yuck, raw cookie dough"! I'd much rather settle for cheesecake or something so fancy that it has to be planned for a couple days prior to enjoying it.
Oh, and yes, yes "accidentallly" I've done illegal things...lol jk jk

    2. Taking those two girls to the store is always an adventure, you never know what's going to happen! From my experiences shopping with the girls I would ask them if they had to go potty before we started shopping of course there answer was "NO", but it seemed like every time we'd get in line to check out one of them would have to go potty and they couldn't hold it till we were done !! But who cares I love those crazy girls ☺

  5. My mom and I had just gotten done with the grocery shopping and we were putting our stuff in the car, when I lifted up my moms purse and saw a little pack of hair ties that hadn't been bagged. We checked the receipt and sure enough they weren't paid for either. Of course, it would have been easy to just let it go. I mean, they didn't notice. But God notices these things. I didn't want to bother going through the check out again so I went inside and handed the package of hair ties to a kind worker and explained what had happened. The worker was understanding and thanked us for our honesty. Thanks for sharing this story! :)

  6. One of my favorite mommy treats are Oreos. Of course, I almost always have to share those! I don't think I've every successfully accidentally stollen anything. I've made it to paying and then realized that there was something else on the bottom of my cart that hadn't been rung up. I think it was a package of diapers. ~LeAnne

  12. I can remember one time when my 3 boys were little, zack was probably 5 or 6, and we were loading the car with groceries. I suddenly realized there was something didn't pay for. So, teachable moment... I told the boys what happened and Zack said, what do we do now? So I asked them, What Should we do? Good thing they all agreed to march back into the store and pay for it! Phew! Thanks for a great story Kylee... and I never knew that raw cookie dough treat existed... I'm sure it will be my new favorite!
